Identify Peaks, Lakes and Places with Skyline Augmented Reality

Skyline uses the camera on your phone or tablet to show you the names of peaks, cities, lakes, cliffs, ridges, mountain passes and even glaciers up to 30 km away.

How Skyline works

Activate Skyline by selecting the More button at the bottom right of the map and then selecting "Skyline". Your phone camera will then activate to enable you to see names of all the peaks, lakes and much more in your area.

You can capture Skyline views by selecting the camera icon at the bottom right of the screen and then show them to your friends using the “Share” icon in the bottom right of the capture itself. These recordings are saved in the library of your smartphone.

With the help of the content button above the camera, you can choose what exactly you want to be displayed: mountain peaks, bodies of water and / or locations.

The "X" at the bottom left of the screen ends the function.

Navigate using Skyline whilst discovering points of interest

For Apple devices (iOS operating system): To be absolutely sure about the route you're taking, you can also use Skyline augmented reality to navigate. Simply select your route, start navigation, open Skyline and the navigation arrows will be blended into your camera's view.

Skyline is now able to identify even more points of interest within your area, such as refreshment stops and museums and you can create and add such points via Skyline to your "My Map" list.

If the display is not accurate

The compass and GPS on the device are used to display the names of peaks, lakes and much more. The compass has an accuracy of plus/ minus 3 degrees.

There should be no metallic or electrical devices (e.g. keys, cars, ...) in the vicinity while using Skyline and you should be outdoors.

If the calibration alone does not achieve the desired accuracy, closing and restarting the skyline before calibration may help.

The compass should be calibrated regularly.

I am in a tall building with a view and the features I am looking at are not labelled

The app does not recognize that you are above ground level. From the ground you might not be able to see features and so this restriction will still apply even at height.

Good to know

Skyline can identify points on 80% of the earth's land mass in most countries of the world.

All the information required for Skyline to function is downloaded whenever you save a route or map for offline use, meaning it can be used without an internet connection.

The magnetic points used to close phone cases have a negative effect on the compass of your smartphone. To use Skyline, you should take your device out of its case for one or two days before calibrating it.
