The route from Hendaye to Banyuls-sur-Mer is one of the most famous long-distance hiking trails in France. On its way from the rugged Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean, you will pass tranquil villages, idyllic valleys, imposing ridges, magnificent mountain lakes and deep gorges. You will pass some of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees, experience overwhelming panoramas and landscapes, but also often very steep and long ascents and descents A good part of the route is in the Néouvielle nature reserve. If you are looking for peace and variety, you will find it here. An experienced hiker will need one and a half to two months for the grandiose trekking route.

Author’s recommendation

Towards the end of the tour, you will come across numerous hot springs in the region around Mont-Louis. There you can regenerate. Then you are ready for the finish.

Safety information

Due to the altitudes the weather can change quickly in the mountains. You should be prepared for this. For the ascent in one piece, a very good physical condition and fitness is absolutely necessary, as well as surefootedness and a head for heights.

Tips and suggestions

In the mountains, mobile phone reception is often very limited. You can expect to have no reception for days at a time  There are telephone and emergency lines available in mountain huts.
