Tropical coast, savannahs, lakes and swamps

On the coastal strip, the country has tropical vegetation and a hot and humid climate. In the north, the Maasai savannah rises to between 200 and 1100 m above sea level, while the Serengeti stretches out to the northwest. To the east, impressive craters and volcanoes rise up, including the highest mountain massif on the continent, Mount Kilimanjaro. In the south, the country is characterised by a high plateau that lies at around 900 to 1200 m and reaches as far as Lake Malawi.

The Great Desert is the highest mountain massif on the continent, Mount Kilimanjaro.

The majority of the country is dominated by wet and dry savannahs, where huge baobab trees and umbrella acacias grow.

Hemi-wastlands and coastal plains with mangroves make up another part of the landscape.

Tanzania has a share in three of the continent's largest lakes: Lake Victoria in the north, Lake Tanganyika in the west and Lake Malawi in the south.

Ngorongoro, Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro

In the north of Tanzania, volcanoes and mountain massifs tower up. Ngorongoro, on the edge of the Serengeti, is a sinkhole into which one can descend. A wide variety of animals such as zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, gazelles, lions, leopards, elephants and hippos live in the protected circle. The crater is considered to have the highest density of predators on the entire African continent. For the Maasai living there, the Ngorongoro also has spiritual significance; for example, part of the crater floor was used as a burial ground.

Mount Meru rises to 4562 m in Arusha National Park. The volcano can be climbed in three stages with overnight stays. It is also a suitable starting point for the larger ascent of Kilimanjaro, which rises about 100 km to the east, on the Kenyan border. The highest mountain massif in Africa rises at Uhuru Peak on Mount Kibo 5895 m.

On safari

In Tanzania, 16 national parks invite you to experience the impressive landscape and a great variety of animals. In the Serengeti National Park, for example, the world-famous animal migration takes place every year. More than one million wildebeest, more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle are on the move. Outside the migration period, there are also large herds of elephants and griraffes.

The Mikumi National Park is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Mikumi National Park is part of Africa's largest game reserve, the Selous Game Reserve. Here you can see lions, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, impala and bighorn herds.
