This great, little, varied route is predominantly off-road and is a great introduction to mountain biking. The uphills are short but some may be too steep to ride; the downhills are fairly gentle. The route circumnavigates Fernilee Reservoir in the beautiful Goyt Valley.

Bakewell to Chee Dale on the old disused railway track. At just over 18.5 miles, this is a very easy route to follow, made more interesting by the 6 tunnels and many viaducts. Some being quite high above the river.

This short route is all on tarmac, mostly on quiet lanes through the limestone dales of the White Peak. The scenery is beautiful, with rolling hills divided by dry stone walls. I think the ride is best done in spring when the fields are full of lambs.

At 10.7 miles, this route is not a long one but it does have good climbs. In fact the ascent, on the road, is a bit of a roller coaster with lot of ups and downs. From the turn around point it is downhill all the way after the first fifty yards.

A wonderful ride that starts following the Monsal Trail; a disused railway, imperceptibly climbing towards Buxton. A couple of short, challenging tracks take you high above the village of Chelmorton where you join quiet lanes to enjoy a gentle descent to Bakewell, rejoining the Monsal Trail.

A great little ride, but one that still packs a reasonable punch. Good moorland trails lead onto some superb technical singletrack before finishing on the UK’s first crowd-funded mountain bike trail.Distance: 16km (9.9 miles). Total climb: 500m (1,640ft). Time: 1-2hrs.
