Planning your city walk in Ljubljana

Preparation is everything - this is also true when it comes to your city walk through Ljubljana. It's best to familiarize yourself with the most important sights and the local conditions while you're still at home. If you are visiting the capital of Slovenia for the first time, it is worthwhile to take a professional city tour to get a first orientation. Later, you can continue the sightseeing trip on your own.

Since Ljubljana is a comparatively small city, you can easily visit it in just one weekend. A visit in spring, late summer or autumn is especially recommended. Then you can look forward to mild temperatures and numerous hours of sunshine. Ideal conditions for a leisurely stroll through the city.

The most important sights at a glance

The historic old town of Ljubljana has a lot of beautiful medieval buildings, monuments and cultural sights to offer in a small area. Stroll through the alleys and across the squares, admire the castle on its grand hill, walk along the river and enjoy Slovenia's culinary delights at the end of the day.

Ljubljana Castle:

The castle is enthroned on a steep, wooded hill directly above the old town of Ljubljana and is the city's most imposing landmark. The medieval building is already 900 years old. You can reach the castle either by cable car or on foot. A visit to the castle is also an integral part of most professional city tours.

The Three Bridges (Tromostovje):

With his architectural style, the architect Joe Plecnik shaped the townscape of the city. Among his most famous buildings are the Three Bridges, Tromostovje, which serve as a connection across the Ljubljanica River. In Plecnik's house you can also marvel at the expert's legacy - there you will also find personal items of the planner.

Dragon's Bridge (Zmajski most):

Perhaps the best known of the many bridges across the Ljubljanica. The Dragon Bridge, so named for the proud bronze dragon figures at its ends, was built in 1901 and is a gem of Art Nouveau architecture.

Preeren Square with Franciscan Church:

Preeren Square marks the centre of the historic old town. Visitors can enjoy an exciting mixture of the baroque and secession styles. The Franciscan Church with its pink façade is also located on the square, probably the best-known building in the city.

The City Museum:

If you are not only interested in a tour of the city, but also in its history, you should visit the city museum. The permanent exhibition informs you about the changing history and the development of the city.

Enjoy nature in the city

On a guided tour of the city, you will probably focus on the old town. But if you explore Ljubljana on your own, you can also get off the beaten track. If you want to experience nature in the city, you should take a city walk along the Ljubljanica River. There are green paths on both sides of the river that lead you along the water through the town. You will also pass numerous green spaces, which will quickly make you forget that you are in a big city.

The district of Krakov is a good address for city walks away from the ostentatious buildings. Among other things, you will find old fishermen's cottages there. If you continue westwards from there, you will also pass the ruins of the Roman settlement of Emona and the Roman wall.

In short: Slovenia's capital is versatile and also has a lot to offer outside the city centre - so even unconventional travellers will get their money's worth here.
